So we're going to start today by describing some common household objects that you might find in your house. And like always, we're going to try to see if we can find similarities between English and Swedish. And luckily, or to our benefit, there are many such similarities. Like the ones you see here: the radio, which is radio, soffa, lampa. These are of course very similar in English, and we can try to use this to our benefit.
So, for example, en soffa, that would be "a sofa". En lampa, en lampa is of course a lamp. TV is TV as well. How do you pronounce that?
Tv, tv. En laptop.
Dator would be computer, dator. But laptop, you could say laptop. You can also say bärbar dator, which means like a computer that you can carry. Bärbar is something that you can carry.
Ett rum is of course "a room".
And then finally, the one we've covered a lot, ett hus is of course "a house".
How do you say "lies"? Not lies in terms of somebody who who doesn't speak the truth, but rather lies in terms of something lies somewhere. In Swedish, of course, we would use this word a lot more than we would in English. How would you say that word?
Ligger, ligger.
So if I say "it lies on the table", Den ligger på bordet.
"My brother is lying on a sofa." Min bror ligger på en soffa. Min bror ligger på en soffa.
Where is it?
Var är den? "Where" is of course "var". Not to be confused with "when" which is "när". "Var" is of course "where".
Where is it lying?
Var ligger den?
I am in my room.
Jag är i mitt rum.
I am sitting on a sofa in my room.
"I'm sitting on a sofa".
I have a new sofa. Do you want to see it? It's in my house. I like to sit on it.
Jag har en ny soffa. Vill du se den? Den är i mitt hus. Jag tycker om att sitta på den.
I'm watching YouTube on my laptop in my room.
So "I am watching YouTube" is of course "jag tittar på YouTube". You could say "jag ser på YouTube". I believe that's the word we've been using so far, "att se". You can also say "titta" which is more like "looking", "watching".
Whereas "ser" is more like "see". Although you can use this in this context also. Where are you? I'm sitting on your sofa in your house.
So, "where are you?" Var är du? I'm sitting on your sofa in your house.
Of course ditt hus and not din hus, because it's ett hus.
I'm buying a new lamp for their house. I need a big lamp.
So to buy is of course köper, köper, att köpa. Lamp we know is lampa, and then I need is of course jag behöver.
So, "I'm buying a new lamp for their house. I need a big lamp": Jag köper en ny lampa för deras hus. Jag behöver en stor lampa.
I think my sofa is bigger than your sofa.
Större än din soffa - bigger than your sofa.
You want to watch TV? There is a good documentary about food from Italy.
"You want to watch TV?" is of course Vill du se på tv?
Det finns - there is, det finns en bra dokumentär. And of course this is a new word, but you can always try to guess, and sometimes you'll be off, sometimes you'll be correct. About, so to say about, we say om.
