Names are often the first Swedish words you need. Our free course starts with introductions (Hej, jag heter…) and the sounds that make Swedish names tricky, like å, ä, ö and the soft k. Start with the free lessons, or try typing names with the Swedish keyboard tool.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most popular Swedish names?

Among babies named in 2022, the most popular girls' names were Astrid, Alma, Ella, Alice, Selma, and the most popular boys' names were Liam, William, Hugo, Noah, Nils. Among everyone living in Sweden, the most common names are older ones: Anna, Maria, Eva for women and Lars, Anders, Johan for men.

Why do the figures stop at 2022?

Statistics Sweden (SCB) published Sweden's name statistics as open data until it stopped producing them in 2024. Its last figures cover babies named in 2022 and the population at the end of 2020. Newer figures are published by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket), but not under an open licence we can reuse here.

Where do the meanings come from?

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary, which records the origin of many names with sources. We only show an origin when Wiktionary has one, and we link to the entry. Where a name has no sourced origin, the page says so rather than guessing.

What does 'the first name they use' mean?

Swedes often have two or three first names but go by one of them, called the tilltalsnamn. SCB counts that name, so a man registered as Karl Johan Erik who goes by Johan counts as a Johan.

How do you pronounce Swedish names?

With Swedish spelling rules. J is said like the English y (Johan, Jonas). G and k before e, i, y, ä and ö usually soften: Göran starts with a y sound and Kerstin with a soft 'ch' sound. Å sounds close to the vowel in 'more'. Every name page has a Listen button, using a native speaker's recording where one exists.

Popularity figures: Statistics Sweden (SCB), name statistics (BE0001) from the Statistical Database, released as open data under CC0. Each spelling is counted as its own name, as SCB does. SCB's open name statistics end with babies named in 2022 and the population on 31 December 2020; SCB stopped producing name statistics in 2024 and now points to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for newer figures.
