Many English nouns ending in -ation, such as information, pass straight into Swedish unchanged. This lesson shows how to turn them into verbs by adding -era, then conjugate those verbs by adding r. It is a quick way to unlock a large chunk of vocabulary for free.

Okay, so now we are ready to begin. And a good place to begin is to look at the type of words that exist in both Swedish and English. So this will allow us to borrow words from the English vocabulary that we already possess. So this is essentially a free vocabulary because we don't need to memorize new words, we don't need to acquire new words.
Instead, all we need to do is to understand how to slightly change it or slightly pronounce it differently in order to make it into a Swedish word. So let's give an example of what I'm talking about. In English, like in many other European languages, you have a lot of words that end with -ation. Like, for example, information, inspiration, integration, administration, and presentation.
And guess what, all of these words that have been listed here exist in Swedish. And they are even spelled exactly the same way. So information is pronounced as information. Information. So see if you can pronounce that one more time. How do you say information in Swedish?
Information. And notice that the -ation, the "sh" sound becomes a "kh" sound, almost as if you're trying to clear the upper end of your throat, "kh", "kh". But not as harsh as that, so what you get is information.
Inspiration is inspiration. Inspiration.
What about integration? How would you pronounce that in Swedish?
Integration. Integration. And hopefully what you did was you tried to do it yourself. And if you do not have enough time, you simply pause and unpause when you're finished. So, administration, how would you say that?
Administration. Administration.
Okay, what about presentation?
Presentation. Okay, so now we've gained a lot of words. And sometimes the spelling is not exactly the same, it could differ. So for instance, decoration would be dekoration. Dokumentation is documentation. But they are spelt slightly differently.
Instead of a C, you have a K. So dokumentation is documentation. And introduktion finally is introduction.
Now that we have these words, we can actually do something very interesting. We can actually make these words into verbs. A doing type of word, right? A verb is something you do. To eat, to fly, to talk, to run. Here we have information.
So in English, in order to make this into a verb, we would say to inform. And we would remove the -ation, right? But in Swedish, what we would do instead is we would remove the -ation, we get inform, then we add on -era. So what we get is informera.
Informera.
So how do you think you would say to inspire? If information becomes informera, to inform. What would you say about to inspire?
Inspirera. So when you cut off the -ation part, you're left with inspir. And then you add on -era. Inspirera. Integration, integration. So how do you say to integrate?
Integrera. You get "integration". Remove the "-ation" and you get "integrera".
To administrate?
Administrera. And how do you say "present", "to present"? Presentera. And finally the last ones: "decoration", "to decorate": Dekorera. "Documentation": Dokumentera.
"To document". "To introduce" is "introducera". So it's a bit different. Just like in English, you wouldn't say "to introduct". No, instead you would say "to introduce".
It becomes a sort of an S sound. So it's the same here: Introducera. "To introduce". Okay, so now that we have all of these "to" forms. The "to" form is very important because it's also the dictionary form.
However, when we're using a word actively in a sentence, speaking about something that's happening right now, what we do is we use a different form of that verb. So for instance, in English, "to inform" is the "to" form. However, if I want to say "he informs", I have to add on an S, right?
So I change the verb. It's also called to conjugate, but that's not important. So we change the verb. "To inform" became "informs". "He informs".
In Swedish, in order to produce this form, we would use an R. So we would say: Informerar. So that would be like "he informs": Han informerar.
Informerar. So how would you say "inspires"?
Inspirerar. What about "integrates"?
Integrerar. And of course the remaining ones are the same: Administrerar, presenterar, dekorerar, dokumenterar.
And finally, how do you think you would say "introduces"?
Introducerar. Great, so now we have actually a lot of vocabulary that we can practice. So let's begin and form some basic sentences. "He informs." In order to say "he" in Swedish, you would say "han". Han.
So how would you say "he informs"?
Han informerar.
What about "she informs"? And "she" in Swedish would be "hon".
Hon. Hon informerar. Okay, so how do you say "he documents"?
Han dokumenterar. What about "he presents"?
Han presenterar. Okay, so now we can actually make a longer sentence and we can say "she informs Adam". So how would you say that? "She informs Adam." The same order as in English.
Hon informerar Adam. And this is what makes Swedish such an easy language to learn for English speakers, word order is very often the same.
"She administrates." How would you say that?
Hon administrerar.
And finally, "I present". And to say "I" in Swedish, you would say "jag". Jag. So, "I present".
Jag presenterar. And you should also note that when Swedish people speak, they tend to omit the last letter. So you would probably hear "ja presenterar" instead of "jag presenterar".
