Complete Swedish – Season 2 · Lesson 44 of 44 · 10 min

Swedish words ending in -isk

This lesson closes season two with spelling patterns: English -le words like single and jungle gain an extra e in Swedish, and -ic or -al adjectives typically become -isk, as in ekonomisk and politisk. Practice sentences reinforce these conversions.

What the lesson covers

This lesson focuses on identifying patterns between English and Swedish words to facilitate learning. It demonstrates that English words ending in -LE, particularly those with -GLE, often involve placing an 'E' between the G and L in Swedish (e.g., "single" becomes "singel", "jungle" becomes "djungel"). Additionally, English words using 'C' for a 'K' sound typically switch to 'K' in Swedish (e.g., "cable" becomes "kabel", "cycle" becomes "cykel"). Other words like "signal," "model," and "tunnel" often retain similar spellings with minor vowel adjustments. A significant pattern covered is the conversion of English adjectives ending in -ic or -al to Swedish by adding the suffix -isk (e.g., "economic" becomes "ekonomisk," "political" becomes "politisk," "strategic" becomes "strategisk"). The lesson concludes with practice sentences reinforcing these grammatical and phonetic transformations.

How the lesson starts

The opening of the lesson transcript. The rest is in the course, synced to the video.

Let's keep on using our tested method of borrowing from English and trying to identify patterns that work in both English and Swedish. In this lesson, we're going to look at some words that end with -le or some variant of that. So, for example, you have "single", you have "jungle", "cable", and so forth.

For these words in Swedish, you can often just switch the order of the g and the l. So, you don't get "single" as in g-l-e, g-l-e, g-l-e, you get singel. So, you need that e to be in between the g and the l, essentially.

And then, for some of the other words, you might need to do some other changes to make it look a bit more Swedish.
