Swedish false friends: 60 words that don't mean what you think
The short answer
Swedish false friends are words that look like English words but mean something different. Rolig means fun, not rolling. Semester means holiday, not a school term. Eventuellt means possibly, not eventually. Gift means married (or poison), fart means speed, slut means end, barn means child, bra means good, kind means cheek and a chef is your boss, not a cook. Below are 60 of the most common ones, grouped by how much trouble they cause, each with the real meaning, the word you actually want and an example sentence.
Swedish and English are related, so thousands of words really are shared: hus (house), bok (book), vatten (water), finger. That is exactly why false friends are dangerous. After a few hundred real matches, your brain starts trusting every lookalike.
The famous ones
These are the words every English speaker in Sweden laughs about, usually after making the mistake once.
| Swedish | What it means | Looks like | The Swedish for that |
|---|---|---|---|
| gift | married; poison | gift | present, gåva |
| fart | speed | fart | fis |
| slut | end, finished, out of | (rude English word) | – |
| barn | child | barn | lada |
| bra | good | bra | bh, behå |
| kiss | pee (noun, informal) | kiss | puss, kyss |
| kissa | to pee | to kiss | pussa, kyssa |
| kock | cook, chef | (rude English word) | – |
| glass | ice cream | glass | glas |
| rolig | fun, funny | rolling | rullande |
Examples:
- Är du gift? (Are you married?) Careful with giftig: it means poisonous.
- Svampen innehåller ett farligt gift. (The mushroom contains a dangerous poison.) Here gift is an ett word; "married" is an adjective.
- Sänk farten! (Slow down! Literally "lower the speed".) Road signs saying Farthinder mark a speed bump.
- Filmen är slut. (The film is over.) Mjölken är slut. (We're out of milk.) Slutet is "the end", and Slut on a shop shelf means sold out.
- Hur många barn har du? (How many children do you have?)
- Hur mår du? – Bra, tack! (How are you? – Good, thanks!)
- Jag måste kissa. (I need to pee.) A kiss is en puss (a peck) or en kyss.
- Han jobbar som kock på en restaurang. (He works as a cook in a restaurant.)
- Vill du ha en glass? (Do you want an ice cream?) A drinking glass is ett glas, with one s.
- Det var jätteroligt! (That was really fun!) Rolig covers both "fun" and "funny": ett roligt skämt (a funny joke).
Words that cause real misunderstandings
These are less funny and more dangerous, because the sentence still makes sense with the wrong meaning.
Eventuellt: possibly, not eventually
Eventuellt means "possibly, if it happens, if any". Eventuella frågor means "any questions (there may be)". "Eventually" is till slut, så småningom or med tiden.
- Jag kommer eventuellt på fredag. (I might come on Friday.)
- Eventuella frågor besvaras av kundtjänst. (Any questions will be answered by customer service.)
- Till slut hittade vi huset. (Eventually we found the house.)
Aktuell: current, relevant, not actual
Aktuell means current, topical, relevant or under consideration. "Actual" is faktisk or verklig, and "actually" is faktiskt or egentligen.
- Det är en aktuell fråga. (It's a topical issue.)
- Är det aktuellt att flytta? (Is moving something you're considering?)
- Han är inte aktuell för jobbet längre. (He is no longer being considered for the job.)
- Vad hände faktiskt? (What actually happened?)
Semester: holiday, not term
Semester is your paid holiday from work. A school or university term is termin, and a school holiday is lov.
- Vi har semester i juli. (We're on holiday in July.)
- Vårterminen börjar i januari. (The spring term starts in January.)
- Barnen har sportlov vecka 8. (The children have their winter break in week 8.)
Chef: boss, not cook
A chef is a manager or boss. A cook or chef is a kock.
- Jag måste fråga min chef. (I have to ask my boss.)
- Hon är chef för ekonomiavdelningen. (She is head of the finance department.)
Middag: dinner, not midday
Middag is the main evening meal. Midday is mitt på dagen or lunchtid, and noon is klockan tolv.
- Vad blir det till middag? (What's for dinner?)
Full and ful
Full can mean full, but when said about a person it means drunk. If you have eaten enough, you are mätt. And ful, with one l, means ugly.
- Glaset är fullt. (The glass is full.)
- Nej tack, jag är mätt. (No thanks, I'm full.)
- Vilken ful tröja! (What an ugly jumper!)
Recept: recipe and prescription, not receipt
Recept is both a recipe and a doctor's prescription. A receipt is ett kvitto.
- Kan jag få receptet? (Can I have the recipe?)
- Läkaren skrev ut ett recept. (The doctor wrote a prescription.)
- Vill du ha kvittot? (Do you want the receipt?)
Känslig and sensibel: sensitive, not sensible
Both känslig and sensibel mean sensitive. "Sensible" is förnuftig or vettig.
- Hon har känslig hud. (She has sensitive skin.)
- Det var ett förnuftigt beslut. (It was a sensible decision.)
Sympatisk: likeable, not sympathetic
Sympatisk means pleasant, likeable. "Sympathetic" in the sense of understanding is förstående or medkännande.
- Han verkar väldigt sympatisk. (He seems very nice.)
- Hon var förstående när jag blev sjuk. (She was sympathetic when I got ill.)
Konsekvent: consistent, not consequent
- Du måste vara konsekvent med barnen. (You have to be consistent with the children.)
Kontrollera: check, not control
Kontrollera means to check or verify. To control is styra, behärska or ha kontroll över.
- Kontrollera att dörren är låst. (Check that the door is locked.)
Biljon: trillion, not billion
Swedish uses the long scale: en miljard is a thousand million (English billion), and en biljon is a million million (English trillion). This is a real trap in news about money. The Swedish numbers tool shows big numbers in words.
- Projektet kostade tre miljarder kronor. (The project cost three billion kronor.)

Words that are not false friends after all
Some words feel suspicious but mean what you think:
- Lunch means lunch. Swedes just eat it early, often between 11 and 12.
- Kontor, telefon, information, station and thousands of other international words are safe.
How to protect yourself
- Learn each word with a sentence. Är du gift? is impossible to misread once you have seen it.
- Be suspicious when an English meaning "almost" fits. If aktuell seems to mean "actual" but the sentence feels odd, look it up.
- Check in a dictionary. Search any word in our Swedish dictionary, for example rolig, semester, eventuellt or aktuell.
- Practise the confusing pairs. The confusing words tool drills lookalike pairs in context.
- Read and listen a lot. False friends stop being dangerous once you have met the real meaning a few dozen times. The reader lets you click any word in a text for its meaning.
