- A working day squeezed between a public holiday and a weekend (or another day off). Which days they are depends on the year.
- Day off?
- A klämdag is a normal working day. Some workplaces close or give it as a day off, and many people take it as holiday.
Klämdag comes from klämma, to squeeze: a single working day squeezed between two days off. The classic one is the Friday after Kristi himmelsfärdsdag, Ascension Day, which is always a Thursday. Take Friday off and you get a four-day weekend for the price of one day of leave.
Swedes plan around them. Ask a colleague in spring whether they work on the klämdag and you will see how much it matters. Some workplaces close and some employers give the day off; schools sometimes make it a study day without lessons (studiedag) or a day off.
How it works in practice
- Taking a semesterdag (a day of leave) to make a long weekend (långhelg).
- Some agreements and employers give the klämdag off, or let staff work in advance to earn it.
- Schools and preschools sometimes close or have a reduced service on the Friday after Ascension Day.
