- Day off?
- Valborgsmässoafton is a working day, often a shorter one. Första maj (1 May) is a public holiday.
Valborg, or valborgsmässoafton, is the evening Swedes greet spring, even if there is still snow on the ground in the north. Towns and villages light big bonfires (valborgsbål or majbrasor) at dusk, a choir sings spring songs, and someone gives a short speech to welcome the spring (vårtal).
In the university towns Uppsala and Lund, sista april is the biggest party of the student year, with picnics in the parks from early morning. The next day, 1 May, is a public holiday with marches and speeches by the labour movement and political parties.
What Swedes do
- A bonfire in the evening, organised by the local association or municipality, with a choir and sometimes fireworks.

- Students in Uppsala and Lund: picnics, early breakfasts with friends and, in Uppsala, putting on their white student caps together at 3 pm.
