Istället: the Swedish word for instead
What the lesson covers
This lesson focused on expressing the concept of "instead" in Swedish, introducing the word "istället" along with "på grund av" for "because of" or "due to." A significant portion of the lesson was dedicated to improving comprehension of spoken Swedish through listening exercises, which included discussions on the reciprocal verbs "träffas" and "ses" (both meaning "to meet" or "to see each other"). The instructor guided students through audio examples, first asking them to listen and understand, and then providing the text and translation for detailed analysis, reinforcing vocabulary and grammatical structures.

How the lesson starts
The opening of the lesson transcript. The rest is in the course, synced to the video.
Now, one important thing in language is, of course, being able to talk about replacing things with other things: "I want this instead of that." You know, "I don't want that, I want this instead." So it's important to be able to express that. Um, and then following that, it's also important, as we've said previously, to be able to understand spoken Swedish, so we're going to do as we've done in the past and listen to a few listening exercises and see if you can understand what's being said.
Now, the word for "instead" is, of course, istället, i stället, "in stead of". Okay. "We came because of you." Okay, "to come" is of course att komma. And the past form is "we came" in English and in Swedish: vi kom.
The video plays beside a transcript that follows it line by line. Swedish words are underlined; tap one and the video pauses, the meaning appears, and the word goes into your library. At the end there is a five-question quiz written from this exact lesson, and every word can be practised out loud.
