- The Saturday between 31 October and 6 November. Allhelgonaafton is the Friday before.
- Day off?
- Alla helgons dag is a public holiday, but it is always a Saturday. Allhelgonaafton, the Friday, is a working day, sometimes shorter.
Alla helgons dag is a day to remember the dead. At dusk, families go to cemeteries and light candles (gravljus) on the graves of relatives, or at the memorial grove (minneslunden) if there is no grave. With thousands of small flames in the November dark, cemeteries become one of the most beautiful sights of the Swedish year.
Halloween arrived in Sweden in the 1990s and is now celebrated with costumes and trick-or-treating around the same time, mainly by children and young people. The two are separate: Halloween is for fun, alla helgons dag is quiet.
What Swedes do
- Lighting candles on graves or in the memorial grove, often on the Saturday afternoon or evening.
- Concerts and services in churches, where the names of those who died in the past year may be read out.
- Halloween parties and children going door to door saying Bus eller godis!
- Many schools have their autumn break (höstlov) around the same week.
