Frequently asked questions

What is the most popular Swedish girl's name?

Astrid was the most popular name for baby girls in 2022, given to 603 girls, followed by Alma, Ella, Alice. Among all women in Sweden the most common name is Anna.

What are traditional Swedish girls' names?

The names most Swedish women carry today (Anna, Maria, Eva, Karin, Lena, Emma) are the traditional ones. Many popular baby names are old names coming back, such as Astrid, Signe, Sigrid, Ingrid, which go back to Old Norse.

Are the spellings counted together?

No. Like SCB's own table, every spelling counts as its own name, so Maja and Maya have separate figures. Lists that merge spellings rank some names higher.

Popularity figures: Statistics Sweden (SCB), name statistics (BE0001) from the Statistical Database, released as open data under CC0. Each spelling is counted as its own name, as SCB does. SCB's open name statistics end with babies named in 2022 and the population on 31 December 2020; SCB stopped producing name statistics in 2024 and now points to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for newer figures.
