Don't make them switch: order at a Swedish café out loud

Every learner in Sweden knows the moment: you try your Swedish, and the person answers in English. Here you get three chances per order. Say it out loud, keep it in Swedish.

Pick your café

Answer the barista out loud. Get it wrong 3 times and he switches to English.

How to play

Pick a level. The barista greets you and asks something; your task is shown under his line. Tap the button, answer in Swedish, and tap again when you are done. If he understands, the order moves on. If not, you get a hint and he loses a little patience. Three misses and he switches to English.

Phrases for the café

  • Kan jag få en kanelbulle? Can I have a cinnamon bun?
  • Äter du här eller tar du med? Eating in or taking away?
  • Jag tar med. To take away.
  • Kan jag betala med kort? Can I pay by card?

Frequently asked questions

Does it record me?

No. It uses your browser's built-in speech recognition. In Chrome and Edge the browser sends your voice to its own speech service to turn it into text; Lingolib never receives any audio, and nothing is stored.

Which browsers work?

Chrome, Edge and Safari, on computers and phones. Firefox has no speech recognition, so you can play by typing instead.

It didn't understand me, but I said it right

Speech recognition is not perfect, especially with å, ä and ö and short answers. Say the whole sentence (Jag tar en kaffe, tack) rather than a single word, and speak at a normal pace. The game accepts many ways of saying each answer.

Why do Swedes switch to English?

Usually to be helpful: most Swedes speak good English and assume they are saving you trouble. Say Jag vill öva på svenska, kan vi fortsätta på svenska? (I want to practise Swedish, can we keep going in Swedish?) and most people will happily slow down for you.
