En or ett? Swedish noun gender checker

Type a noun and see whether it takes en or ett, with its definite and plural forms. It knows 37,000 nouns and works out compounds from their last part.

The answer appears here as you type. Compounds work too: the checker finds the last part.

What en and ett mean

Every Swedish noun belongs to one of two genders. En-words (grammarians say utrum) take the article en: en bil, a car. Ett-words (neutrum) take ett: ett hus, a house. There is no link to male or female, and the meaning of a word usually tells you nothing: en flicka (a girl) but ett barn (a child).

The gender decides more than the article:

What changes with gender
en-wordett-word
a …en bilett hus
the …bilenhuset
a big …en stor bilett stort hus
my …min bilmitt hus
the big …den stora bilendet stora huset
which …?vilken bil?vilket hus?

Patterns that predict the gender

No rule covers every noun, but these endings are reliable enough to lean on. They explain why the checker is confident about words like tidning or konditori even before it looks them up.

Endings and gender
EndingGenderExamples
-ing, -ningenen tidning, en övning, en parkering
-hetenen möjlighet, en nyhet, en säkerhet
-tion, -sionenen station, en diskussion
-are, -ör (people)enen lärare, en läkare, en direktör
-ist, -ant, -ent (people)enen journalist, en student
-a (most)enen flicka, en gata, en kyrka (but ett öga, ett hjärta)
-umettett museum, ett centrum, ett datum
-eriettett bageri, ett konditori, ett tryckeri
-ande, -ende (activities)ettett leende, ett meddelande, ett beteende
-mentettett dokument, ett argument, ett experiment

When you meet a new noun, learn it with its article: en tidning, not just tidning. It costs nothing extra and saves you the guess later. Our full guide to en and ett goes through the patterns and their exceptions in detail.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if a Swedish noun is en or ett?

Mostly you learn it with the word, the way you learn its meaning. Some endings help: nouns in -ing, -het, -tion and -are are en-words, nouns in -um and -eri are usually ett-words, and a compound almost always takes the gender of its last part. When you have no clue, guess en: roughly three Swedish nouns in four are en-words.

Are there more en-words or ett-words?

En-words. Counts vary with the word list used, but around 75 per cent of Swedish nouns are en-words (utrum, common gender) and around 25 per cent are ett-words (neutrum, neuter). New loanwords usually become en-words: en app, en podd, en blogg.

What gender are compound words?

The gender of the last part. Ett hus gives ett sommarhus and ett hyreshus; en bil gives en sportbil. The first part almost never decides (ett ögonblick, despite en blick, is a rare exception), which is why the checker can answer for compounds it has never seen.

Why does en or ett matter?

It changes the words around the noun: the definite form (bilen but huset), adjectives (en stor bil but ett stort hus), and words like min/mitt, den/det and någon/något. Getting it wrong rarely stops you being understood, but it is one of the first things a Swede notices.

Can a noun be both en and ett?

A few can. Fika is used with both. A handful of words even change meaning with gender: ett vad is a bet, while en vad is the calf of your leg. The checker shows en / ett when both are in normal use.
