Two clocks, one language
Swedish uses two systems side by side. In speech people use a 12-hour clock built on quarters and halves: kvart över tre, halv fyra. In writing (timetables, tickets, opening hours, emails about meetings), Swedish uses the 24-hour clock: kl. 15.15, kl. 15.30. There is no "am" or "pm". When the time of day isn't clear, you add it: halv fyra på eftermiddagen.
The spoken clock, step by step
The whole system rests on four fixed points in each hour. Learn these first:
| Time | Swedish | Literally |
|---|---|---|
| 3.00 | tre | three |
| 3.15 | kvart över tre | quarter past three |
| 3.30 | halv fyra | half (to) four |
| 3.45 | kvart i fyra | quarter to four |
The one to watch is halv. Swedish names the half hour after the hour you are heading towards, so halv fyra is 3.30. German and Dutch work the same way (halb vier, half vier); English does not, and British "half four" even means 4.30.
Everything else is counted from the nearest fixed point:
- Up to twenty past: minutes över (past) the hour. Fem över tre (3.05), tio över tre (3.10), tjugo över tre (3.20).
- Around half past: count from halv. Fem i halv fyra (3.25, five to half four), fem över halv fyra (3.35, five past half four). Many Swedes also say tio i halv fyra for 3.20 and tio över halv fyra for 3.40.
- From twenty to: minutes i (to) the coming hour. Tjugo i fyra (3.40), tio i fyra (3.50), fem i fyra (3.55).
- Odd minutes: add minuter (or minut for one) and use the same pattern: sju minuter över tre (3.07), tre minuter i halv fyra (3.27). In relaxed speech people often drop minuter, or round to the nearest five.
Every five minutes from two to three
The same pattern repeats every hour. Here it is for one full hour, with the common alternatives.

The 24-hour clock
In writing, Swedish puts a full stop between hours and minutes and drops the leading zero: kl. 9.05, kl. 14.30, kl. 0.15. Full hours can be written kl. 18. Phones and stations often show 14:30 with a colon, which everyone understands, but the recommended form in text is the full stop.1 Read aloud, a 24-hour time is just the two numbers, often joined by och: fjorton och trettio or fjorton trettio. Our numbers converter spells out any time, date or price.

Asking and talking about time
| English | Swedish |
|---|---|
| What time is it? | Vad är klockan? / Hur mycket är klockan? |
| It's half past two. | Klockan är halv tre. / Den är halv tre. |
| What time does it start? | Hur dags börjar det? |
| At seven. | Klockan sju. |
| Around seven. | Vid sjutiden. / Runt sju. |
| At seven sharp. | Prick sju. / På slaget sju. |
| Just after seven. | Strax efter sju. |
| Nearly seven. | Snart sju. / Nästan sju. |
| This morning (earlier today) | i morse |
| This evening / tonight | i kväll / i natt |
| My watch is fast / slow. | Min klocka går före / efter. |
Words for the time of day follow the pattern på + the definite form for "in the …": på morgonen (in the morning), på förmiddagen (late morning), på eftermiddagen (in the afternoon), på kvällen (in the evening), på natten (at night). For today, Swedish uses i instead: i morse (this morning, already past), i eftermiddag, i kväll, i natt.
Times come up in the very first conversations you have. The free Lingolib course uses them from Season 1, and the guide to everyday Swedish phrases has the rest of the small talk.

Frequently asked questions
What does "halv tre" mean?
Half past two (2.30). Swedish counts the half hour towards the coming hour, so halv tre is "half way to three". English speakers, and especially British English speakers who say "half three" for 3.30, get this wrong for weeks. If in doubt, take one off: halv tre is 2.30, halv nio is 8.30.
How do you ask what time it is in Swedish?
Vad är klockan? or Hur mycket är klockan? Both mean "what time is it?". The answer starts with Klockan är … or, in relaxed speech, Den är … (Den är kvart över tre). To ask when something happens, say Hur dags …? or När …?: Hur dags börjar filmen? What time does the film start?
Do Swedes use the 24-hour clock?
In writing, almost always: timetables, tickets, opening hours, school schedules and meeting invitations say 14.30, not 2.30 pm. In conversation most people use the 12-hour words (halv tre) and add på eftermiddagen or på kvällen only when it is not obvious. Announcements and booking systems read the 24-hour time aloud: fjorton och trettio, or just fjorton trettio.
Is it 14.30 or 14:30 in Swedish?
The Swedish writing rules recommend a full stop between hours and minutes and no leading zero: kl. 9.45, kl. 14.30. A colon (14:30) is very common too, because phones and digital clocks show it, and nobody will misunderstand you. In running text, use the full stop.
How do you say "at three o'clock" in Swedish?
Klockan tre, with no preposition: Vi ses klockan tre. In writing it is often shortened to kl. 3 or kl. 15. "Around three" is vid tretiden or ungefär klockan tre, and "exactly at three" is prick klockan tre or på slaget tre.
