Two melodies
Swedish is one of the few European languages where pitch can tell words apart. Phoneticians call it word accent or tonal word accent; learners usually say pitch accent or simply the Swedish melody. There are two:
- Accent 1 (acute): in central Swedish the stressed syllable is low, followed by one rise. All one-syllable words have it.
- Accent 2 (grave): the stressed syllable starts high and falls, then the pitch rises again on a later syllable. Two peaks in all. This is the sing-song that foreigners imitate when they imitate Swedish.
The drawings above show the melodies for a word said on its own in central Swedish. In a sentence the second peak shrinks or disappears when the word is not in focus, which is one reason the accent is hard to hear at first.
Which words get which accent
There are rules, and they cover most words. The accent belongs to the word and its endings, not to the sentence.
| Kind of word | Accent | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| One syllable | 1 | bil, hus, stor |
| One-syllable noun + definite ending | 1 | bilen, huset, anden (the duck) |
| Present tense in -er | 1 | läser, köper (but infinitive läsa, köpa: 2) |
| Stress on the last syllable | 1 | banan, station, musik |
| Unstressed prefix be-, för- | 1 | betala, förstå |
| Many words in -el, -en, -er | 1 (mostly) | fågel, vatten, vapen, fönster |
| Native two-syllable words, stress on the first | 2 | flicka, pojke, gata, mamma |
| Infinitives in -a | 2 | läsa, skriva, sitta |
| Plurals in -ar, -or | 2 | bilar, flickor |
| Compounds | 2 | sommarhus, fotboll |
The rules explain the famous pairs. Anden the duck is and plus the definite ending, a one-syllable word, so accent 1. Anden the spirit is ande plus -n, a two-syllable word, so accent 2. The same logic gives tomten, tanken and stegen. Exceptions exist: syster and dotter end in -er but have accent 2, and some -er plurals keep accent 1, especially those that change their vowel (fötter, händer).
How much it matters
Swedish has a few hundred minimal pairs separated by accent alone, but context almost always settles the meaning. Nobody at an estate agent's thinks you are asking about Santa when you ask about tomten. Get the accent wrong and you sound foreign, not incomprehensible. That makes it a finishing skill: work on vowel length and the hard consonants first.
When you are ready, listen for it in short, common words you already know: flicka, pojke, gata against bilen, huset, vatten. Hum the melody without the words. Then imitate whole phrases from a native speaker, not single words.
Regional differences
The two accents are found in almost all of Sweden, but the melodies differ. Central Swedish (Stockholm, the Mälaren valley) has the two-peaked accent 2 described here, and it is what national broadcasters mostly use. Southern Swedish (Skåne, Blekinge) has a one-peaked accent 2 with the peak later, so the two accents sound almost mirrored compared with Stockholm. The west coast around Gothenburg has two peaks like Stockholm but a different ending, and Dalarna and Gotland have melodies of their own. In most of Finland Swedish the distinction does not exist at all.
So if a friend from Malmö sounds nothing like the drawings above, neither of you is wrong. Copy the accent of the people you talk to most.
About the audio
Every sound on this page is a real person. Native recordings of both meanings exist for anden and tomten; for the other pairs we found none, so we show the melody without sound rather than play something misleading. Speech synthesis is not a safe teacher for pitch accent: browser voices often give a word the wrong accent, and a voice reading text cannot know which anden you mean.
More practice: the guide to Swedish word tones goes deeper into the rules, and the tongue twisters and dictation train the ear in whole sentences. In our course every sentence is spoken by a native speaker, and Season 1 is free in full.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Swedish pitch accent?
Every stressed word in Swedish carries one of two melodies, called accent 1 (acute) and accent 2 (grave). In central Swedish, accent 1 starts low and has one peak; accent 2 starts high, falls and rises again, which gives Swedish its sing-song sound. A few hundred pairs of words are told apart only by it, like anden (the duck) and anden (the spirit).
Do I need to learn pitch accent to be understood?
Rarely. Context almost always makes the meaning clear, and most Finland Swedish speakers do not use the distinction at all. Pitch accent matters more for sounding natural than for being understood, so work on vowel length and stress first.
Which words have accent 2?
Most native words of two or more syllables stressed on the first: flicka, pojke, gata, skriva, and plurals like bilar. Compounds almost always have accent 2 in central Swedish. Words of one syllable cannot have it, and they keep accent 1 with the definite ending: bil, bilen.
Why does the drill not use a computer voice?
Because browser voices often get the accent wrong, and a voice that reads text cannot know which of two identically spelt words you mean. We only play native recordings, and show the melody as a drawing where we have none.
Do all Swedes say accent 2 the same way?
No. The two accents exist in most of Sweden, but the melody differs: Stockholm has the two-peaked accent 2, southern Swedish has a one-peaked version, and the west coast and Dalarna sound different again. Most speakers in Finland do not distinguish the two accents.
