What happens
Eighty years ago, little Ruben, aged three, played with his spinning top in a sunny square, then rested on his family's own stone steps, which lay in the cold shade. He fell ill and died a few days later. His mother never stopped grieving, and he stayed alive in her mind. When his younger sister sat on the same steps, the mother snatched her up and told her about Ruben, and soon none of the children could see anyone sitting on a stone without thinking of their brother.
The opening of the story, first published in the collection Osynliga länkar (1894). It goes on to show how the dead child, the one their mother seemed to love most, made his brothers and sisters strive all their lives to win the same love, and how he later haunts the next generation, who know him as morbror Ruben.
