Three rules for particle verbs
1. Stress the particle
In Jag håller med dig the stress falls on med. Say the verb lightly and lean on the particle. In the explorer the stressed word is underlined.
2. The particle comes before the object
Word order with particles
Swedish
English
Stäng av tv:n.
Turn off the TV. / Turn the TV off.
Stäng av den.
Turn it off.
Jag tog på mig jackan.

Jag kommer inte ihåg hans namn.
I don't remember his name.
Har du slagit upp ordet?
Have you looked the word up?
3. The meaning can change completely
Some particle verbs have nothing to do with the plain verb. These are the ones worth learning as new words:

Particle or preposition?
The same little word can be a stressed particle or an unstressed preposition, and the meaning changes with it. Listen for the stress:
Particle and preposition
Stressed particle
Unstressed preposition
Vi hälsar PÅ mormor. (We visit Grandma.)
Vi hälsar på mormor. (We say hello to Grandma.)
Hon gick PÅ bussen. (She got on the bus.)
Hon gick på gatan. (She walked in the street.)
Hon kom PÅ honom. (She caught him out.)
Hon kom på måndag. (She came on Monday.)
Particle verbs are also behind many words you see written as one: avstängd (switched off, from stänga av), inställd (cancelled, from ställa in), uppskjuten (postponed, from skjuta upp).
Keep practising
Particle verbs sit in the middle of the sentence, so practise them together with word order in the sentence builder. Look up the plain verbs in the verb conjugator, drill confusing word pairs, or hear tycka om in context in Lesson 39 of the free course. All verbs, meanings and example sentences were written for Lingolib.
Frequently asked questions
What is a particle verb in Swedish?+
A verb plus a small word, the particle, that together mean something new: tycka (think) but tycka om (like), hålla (hold) but hålla med (agree). The particle is usually a word that also works as a preposition or adverb, such as upp, av, på, med, om or ut. English has the same thing in phrasal verbs like give up and turn off.
Which word is stressed in a Swedish particle verb?+
The particle. You say tycker OM, hålla MED, ge UPP, while the verb itself is said without stress. That stress is often the only thing that tells a particle verb from a verb plus a preposition: Hon hälsade PÅ mig means she visited me, but Hon hälsade på mig, with no stress on på, means she said hello to me.
Where does the particle go in a sentence?+
Straight after the verb and before the object, even when the object is a pronoun: Stäng av tv:n, Stäng av den. English can say turn it off; Swedish does not split the verb that way. In a main clause with inte, the order is verb, inte, particle: Jag kommer inte ihåg.
Can particle verbs be written as one word?+
Yes, in participles and many nouns the particle moves to the front and joins the verb: stänga av gives avstängd (switched off), ta emot gives mottagare (receiver), and ställa in gives inställd (cancelled). In the passive both forms exist: mötet ställdes in or mötet inställdes, the second more formal.
How many particle verbs should I learn?+
Start with the ones in this list: they cover most of what you hear in everyday conversation. Learn each one with an example sentence and say it aloud with the stress on the particle, because you will mostly meet them in speech.
