Asking the way (Fråga om vägen)

Swedes rarely start a chat with strangers, but they are happy to help if you ask. Directions come with a lot of small words: rakt fram, till vänster, efter rondellen.

Level A1
  1. You

Ursäkta, får jag fråga en sak?

Excuse me, can I ask you something?

  2. Staff

    Ja, visst.

    Yes, sure.

  3. You

    Hur kommer jag till biblioteket?

How do I get to the library?

  4. Staff

Biblioteket... Ja, du går rakt fram här, förbi apoteket.

The library... Yes, you go straight on here, past the pharmacy.

  5. Staff

Sen tar du andra gatan till vänster.

Then you take the second street on the left.

"Sen" = sedan, then. "Andra" here means second, not other.

  6. Staff

Och så ligger det på höger sida, ett stort grått hus.

And it's on the right-hand side, a big grey building.

  7. You

    Är det långt?

    Is it far?

  8. Staff

Nä, fem minuter kanske. Det är inte långt alls.

Nah, five minutes maybe. It's not far at all.

    "Nä" = a relaxed "nej".

  9. You

Rakt fram, sen andra till vänster?

Straight on, then second on the left?

  10. Staff

Precis. Du kan inte missa det.

    Exactly. You can't miss it.

  11. You

    Tack så mycket!

    Thanks a lot!

  12. Staff

    Ingen orsak!

    No problem!

"Ingen orsak" = you're welcome, literally "no reason".

What you can say

Say each one out loud, then play it to compare.

  • Var ligger stationen?
    Where is the station?
  • Hur långt är det till centrum?
How far is it to the centre?
  • Kan du visa på kartan?
Can you show me on the map?
  • Kan du ta det lite långsammare?
Can you say it a bit slower?
  • Är det åt det här hållet?
    Is it this way?
  • Kan man gå dit?
    Can you walk there?
  • Jag har gått vilse.
    I'm lost.

Good to know

  • Start with "Ursäkta" (excuse me). It is polite enough for anyone, there is no need for formal "ni".
  • Repeat the directions back. People will happily correct you, and it confirms you understood.
