At the supermarket checkout (I kassan)

The cashier talks fast and in half sentences: bag, member card, receipt. Once you know the four or five questions, the checkout takes ten seconds.

    Hi there!

    "Hej hej" is just a friendly hello, not goodbye.

    Ska du ha påse?

    Do you want a bag?

    "Ska du ha" = do you want / will you have. Very common at the till.

  4. You

    Ja, en liten, tack.

    Yes, a small one, please.

  5. Staff

    Har du medlemskort?

    Do you have a member card?

    Also "bonuskort" or "Är du medlem?". Each chain has its own card.

  6. You

    Nej, det har jag inte.

    No, I don't.

  7. Staff

    Okej. Det blir hundrafyrtiotvå och femtio.

    Okay. That's 142.50.

    "Det blir" = that comes to. Prices are read as kronor and öre without saying the words.

    Kan jag betala med kort?

    Can I pay by card?

  9. Staff

    Absolut, det är bara att blippa.

    Sure, just tap.

    "Blippa" = tap a card or phone on the reader. "Det är bara att..." = just go ahead and...

  10. Staff

    Kvittot?

    Receipt?

    Short for "Vill du ha kvittot?" - do you want the receipt?

    Nej tack, det behövs inte.

    No thanks, I don't need it.

    Tack så mycket, ha det bra!

    Thanks a lot, take care!

    Tack, detsamma!

    Thanks, you too!

    "Detsamma" = the same to you. The standard reply to "ha det bra".

Good to know

  • Card is the normal way to pay. Many shops take little or no cash, and Swish at the till is not offered everywhere, so ask before you count on it.
  • Bags cost money and you are asked every time. Bring your own to skip the question.
  • Member cards are free to join and give points and member prices. You can say no every time and nobody minds.
