About the test
| First test | 15 August 2026 in Stockholm. This first sitting was a trial test (utprövningsprov) for people invited by Migrationsverket; UHR says results come at the end of October 2026. The next date has not been announced yet. |
| Format | On paper. Multiple-choice questions with four options, of which one is correct. |
| Language | Swedish only. The test cannot be taken in your native language or in English. |
| Questions | Not yet published. UHR says it will give the number for the next sitting. Swedish media reported about 60 questions for the August 2026 trial test, but UHR has not confirmed this. |
| Time | Not yet published |
| Pass mark | Not yet published. UHR sets the pass mark after the August 2026 trial test has been held. |
| Fee | 2,000 kronor per test, charged from tests held in 2027 (förordning SFS 2026:451, 6 §). Stateless people who have been granted refugee status or a travel document by a Swedish authority do not pay. |
| Who takes it | People aged 16 to 66 who apply for Swedish citizenship (under the rules in force since 6 June 2026) and cannot show knowledge of Swedish society in another way, such as a pass grade in social studies (samhällskunskap) from Swedish grundskola, gymnasieskola, folkhögskola or komvux. You can only register after receiving a letter from Migrationsverket. |
| Exemptions | The knowledge requirement does not apply to people aged 67 or over, stateless people born in Sweden who are under 21, or Nordic citizens who become Swedish by notification (anmälan). Migrationsverket can give a full or partial exemption for disability or other special reasons. UHR offers adapted tests for people who need support on the day. |
| Language test | A separate Swedish language test (B1 for reading and listening, A2 for speaking and writing) is on its way. For reading and listening, the law sets 1 October 2027 at the latest; speaking and writing have no date. On 30 September 2026 Migrationsverket said UHR recommends postponing the test and that no start date is set. The language requirement still applies: until the test exists it can be met with a pass in sfi course D, Swedish grades from school, komvux or folk high school, or Tisus. Other proof that shows a functional level of Swedish is assessed restrictively, so ask Migrationsverket before you rely on it. |
Checked against UHR and Migrationsverket on 2026-10-11. Details are still being announced, so check the sources before you register: UHR: Om medborgarskapsprovet, UHR: Frågor och svar, UHR: Utbildningsmaterial (Sverige i fokus), Migrationsverket: Ansök om svenskt medborgarskap (vuxna), Migrationsverket: Nya regler från 6 juni 2026, Förordning (2026:451) om medborgarskapsprov (fee), Migrationsverket: Provet i svenska kan flyttas fram (2026-09-30).
How to study with these pages
Read the official study material from UHR first, it is free on their website. Then use these pages for the language: read our easy version of the topic aloud, learn the word list, and answer the questions without looking. If a word in the official text stops you, it is probably in the list.
The test is about society, but you still have to read Swedish to pass it, and a separate Swedish language test is planned. Check your reading and listening level with our B1 citizenship language check.
