How to use a frequency list

A frequency list tells you which words earn their place first. The top 100 are mostly pronouns, verbs like vara, ha and göra, and small words that hold sentences together. From about 500 onwards you get the everyday nouns and adjectives that let you talk about your life.

  • Learn words in sentences, not alone. Every word links to its entry, with real example sentences. Saying one out loud teaches you the word, its gender and its word order in one go.
  • Learn nouns with en or ett. The lists and decks include the article, so you never have to guess later. The en or ett checker covers the rest.
  • Learn verbs with their past and supine. The Forms column gives present, past and supine: skriver, skrev, skrivit, so the past tense never takes you by surprise.
  • Review a little every day. Ten new words a day with spaced repetition is 1,000 words in a little over three months.

Frequently asked questions

How many Swedish words do I need to know?

Around 1,000 of the most common words cover roughly 80 per cent of the words in everyday conversation, and 2,000–3,000 get you to the point where you can follow most of it and guess the rest from context. Reading newspapers comfortably takes more, typically 5,000 or so, because written Swedish uses a wider vocabulary than speech.

Where does this frequency list come from?

From word counts over a large collection of Swedish film and TV subtitles (the OpenSubtitles corpus, compiled by Hermit Dave). Subtitles are the closest large, free source to everyday spoken Swedish. We group inflected forms under their dictionary form, so äter, åt and ätit all count towards äta.

How do I import the deck into Anki?

Download the Anki file, then in Anki choose File → Import and pick it. The file tells Anki it is tab-separated and which column is which; choose the Basic note type (or Basic and reversed card if you want both directions) and map Swedish to Front and English to Back. The Forms and Rank columns can go into extra fields or be ignored.

Why are pronouns and small words at the top?

Because they are the most used words in any language. Jag, det, du, att and inte appear in almost every sentence. They are short and learned quickly, and knowing them early makes everything else easier to follow.

Can I use these lists in my own teaching material?

Yes. The data comes from Wiktionary and Folkets lexikon under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike licences, so you can reuse and adapt it as long as you credit the sources and share your version under the same licence.
